✔️Teacher’s Ultimate 5 Time-saving Geography Tips and Guide
Tired of feeling like you can’t squeeze another thing into your school day? You’re not alone!
Fitting geography lessons into an already packed curriculum can feel almost impossible, and sometimes mapping skills and geography get pushed to the back burner.
But what if I told you that teaching geography doesn’t have to be a major time suck? This post is all about giving you back your time. I’ve put together five of the best time-saving, low-prep geography tips that will help your 2nd, 3rd, and 4th graders become geography whizzes.
Draw a Map of an Imaginary Island
Some of the second grade teachers at my school do this activity and I was reminded about it from this page at National Geographic’s Education website. Have your students use map elements, like symbols and a map key, to show different features of the island and its people. You can expand the project with additonal guidelines.
Pro Tip: There are tons of other geography lesson ideas at that National Geographic website page here. Check them out to add even more ideas to your repetroire.
Map Labeling Races
Ready for the first of the time saving geography tips? This is a classic, low-tech, and highly effective activity.
Print out a blank world map or a map of the United States (or any other country/continent). Provide students with a word bank of continents, oceans, or states.
Set a timer for 5 minutes and have them race to correctly label as many places as they can. This is a great way to reinforce memorization in a competitive, fast-paced format.
You can easily differentiate this by providing some students with a partially filled-out map as a reference or challenging others to label without any hints.
Boom Cards From Boom Learning
The third of my time-saving geography tips? Use Boom cards from Boom Learning! The first grade teachers at my school love to load these onto their students’ iPads and then kids can practice skills any time! The general website can be found here and it’s pretty easy to search for what you need. And it’s free for you to get started with a teacher account.
Pro tip: Here’s a link to search results that I got when I searched Boom Cards for “geography”.

Picture Books
The next on my list of geography tips is picture books! Reading aloud picture books is a great idea because a lot of time the books do the work for you as far a teaching information and facts. And natural discussions can come from reading them aloud. They are also easy for a substitute teacher to handle.
And yes, third and fourth grade teachers, you should consider using picture books. You’d be surprised how much your students enjoy them, and the way the material is communicated can make it easier to take in and process for many students, included your ELL students and students with learning disabilities.

Online Geography Games and Quizzes
These are great when you want to review what you have already taught. Leverage the power of technology to make learning a quick and fun daily warm-up or wrap-up. Websites and apps like Seterra or World Geography Games offer a variety of customizable, interactive quizzes.
Students can race against the clock to label continents, identify flags, or place states and their capitals on a map. These tools provide instant feedback and can be used on tablets or as a whole-class activity on an interactive whiteboard, requiring virtually zero prep time from you!
And that’s the end of my time-saving geography tips – nope, just kidding I have one more!
