What’s New In Flexible Seating?

Flexible seating is a great way to help students focus and get what they need while learning. It’s better than just rows of desks because it gives students choices. In this post, we’ll talk about what’s new in flexible seating and how to use them in your classroom.

Wave Seats

The wave chair is an ergonomic stool that has at least 3 configurations: inverted rocker, to a saddle seat to a perch chair/full seat. They are easy to move and will allow students to choose how they are most comfortable without having multiple chairs! One does it all!

Adjustable Floor Chairs

Another fun option is this sturdy yet soft floor seat! Amazon has a similar chair with meemory foam that you can find here.

Moving Minds TiltED Seats

The TiltED seats let students wiggle and not slouch. In this chair, kids can rock back and forth or rotate 90 degrees to tilt side to side. Students will be able to work their core muscles and stay in one seat without being disruptive.

Ergo Stool for Active Sitting

This Ergo Stool is a flexible seat that is active – students will have two feet on the floor but be able to move though a range of positions! Their core will be engaged too.

Spinning Flower Seats

These flower seats are low to the ground so they are easy for small children to access. They spin so students who seek that kind of movement can do so sitting down in one place instead of moving all around the classroom and distracting other. My colleague has one and she puts it in the back of the room, so it’s not a distraction.

It can be found in TikTok shop or in the showcase for mindful.teacher.first ! Check it out!

Lakeshore Flex Space Comfy Pillows

These oversize pillows have water resistant covers that can be machine washed. Students can sit on them or use them as a lap desk by resting a book or device on top of it! Bonus: the foam inside is comfy.

The Surf Portable Lap Desk

Something else that is new in flexible seating: these lap desks which are such a cool version of the traditional lap desk. The ones I used to have were more flimsy plastic from Hobby Lobby and all of them eventually broke. These lap desks might be a fun new option!

Kids Small (Toddler Size) Stool Set

These are cool! You can move them around and reconfigure them as you need or want, or more importantly how your students prefer! I found them at ECRKids.

Safco Swivel Ball Chair

These ball chairs look really different to me. The traditional exercise balls I used led to kids just rolling right off. I bet these are more stable and kids still get that kinesthetic feedback while not flying around the room!

Bouncy Band Wiggle Wobble Chair Feet

If you need more than just their bouncy bands that kids can press their feet into, try these wiggle wobble chair feet from Bouncy Bands to get the whole chair wiggling. What a fun way for students to keep in their chair but moving!

Small Futon-Like Couches

My fellow teacher has one of these in her reading corner. It is water resistant (great for messy kids) but sturdy and soft. I was doing indoor recess duty in her room and two first graders sat comfortably on it and a third kid squeezed on the end. Seems like a great option!

Cube chairs

This is not new in flexible seating, but don’t forget about the standby plastic cube chairs! They still work for many kids and can be easily found in most schools! If you need a new one, here is one from ECRkids.

Back Jack Type Chairs

Another longstanding favorite of children (and teachers) especially for those who have trouble sitting on the rug or floor! They can also be found online as Flex Space Washable Floor Seats from Lakeshore!
