Making Math Practice Engaging: How to Review Key Math Skills in Second Grade

Are you getting ready to review math skills with your students? Doing this is essential to help students solidify math concepts which will help them to build a strong foundation for future learning. In second grade, students are learning a ton of math skills, from addition and subtraction to place value and geometry.

To be sure your students master all of these topics (and more), it’s essential to incorporate engaging review activities into your daily instruction. This blog post will provide you with a variety of fun and effective strategies for reviewing key math skills with your second-grade students.

Math Games

Try board games that review math skills like addition, subtraction, 2D and 3D shapes and place value. You can simply google “free math games” or go to Teachers Pay Teachers.

You can have students use playing cards to practice solving subtraction facts (or addition, if you need to differentiate) with second graders. Dice games are also great for this. I used to love dice like these so students didn’t have to deal with multiple dice.

Dice within dice

These dice also have 2 digit numbers, which are appropriate for the middle of second grade. Again, it will decrease the number of dice students need to use to get large enough numbers. They make it more fun to review math skills!

Educational Websites

To review math skills with independent practice, I love websites like IXL.com and ABCya . IXL is an online learning platform that provides interactive practice exercises for students in grades K-12. Check out just some of what is has to offer for Second Grade Math:

ABCya is an educational games website designed for children in preschool through 6th grade. My second graders were always asking if they can go on ABCya. Its so fun they don’t know they are practicing important skills and reviewing math concepts! Here’s a peek at just the first couple rows of 2nd grade math games:

Math Centers

You can incorporate math centers that match exactly what your students need, while you also pull students in small groups to the teacher table for direct instruction. If you’re new at math centers, try checking out this reddit thread for more advice.

Here are some resources that you may be able to use at second grade math centers to review math skills:

Game Show Style Reviews

Consider incorporating a game show element or leveraging educational technology like  Kahoot or Plickers.

Try Eggspert! (See image below)

Students adore this simple yet effective method. Each team is equipped with a buzzer to “buzz in” and provide their answer. It can be adapted to any subject by simply adding your own questions. It’s a little pricey (about $100) but you might be able to get a parent donation or a small donors choose project to fund it.

Four Corners Game

The four corners game is a classroom activity that can be used as a brain break, icebreaker, or drama game. It involves having students move to a corner of the room to indicate an answer or opinion. It’s a fun way to review math skills with multiple choice questions.

How to play:

  1. Label the four corners of the room
  2. Have students stand in the middle of the room
  3. Read a math question, such as “how many sides are there in a trapezoid?”
  4. Have students move to the corner that best matches their answer
  5. Have students share out their reasons
