10 Read Alouds that Might be New to You
I was at a few bookstores in Maine recently, and came across some read alouds (picture books) that I had not seen before! And a couple that I already knew and loved. But I wanted to share with you in case you’re looking for something new to read to your class this year!
Read Alouds
1. Norman Didn’t Do It
Of course Ryan Higgins has written another great book – this one teaches lessons about jealousy, friendship and what happens when you don’t want to share a friend. Trust me!
2. Pig and Horse and the Something Scary
Pig is worried about something stressful and trying to just distract herself from it. But in this cute story, her friend Horse helps her talk about it and deal with it. It’s a great story about addressing your fears.
3. Shy
The main character, a giraffe named Shy, is unseen for a lot of the book because he is SO shy. He meets a lovely songbird and follows her on a journey, but it is so hard for him to even open his mouth and speak to her. I was an introverted child and could really have identified with this story!
4. Yard Sale
Another terrific picture book that is one of the 10 great read alouds. This is written by Eve Bunting! This tells the tale of a family who needs to move to an apartment and can’t bring most of their items. This story would resonate with many who have had a similar situation .
5. Sincerely, Emerson
The subtitle of this book is “a girl. her letter, and the helpers all around us”. Now, I am not going to get this quote right, but remember Mr. Rogers said in the difficult times to find the helpers? This is giving me vibes of this. Plus, it’s a true story!

6. And Then Came Hope
This is a cute book for young children! All the ships and boats are getting sick or injured, but don’t worry, Hope is here to help! Plus the S.S. Hope is real ship that has helped with humanitarian efforts!
7. One Morning in Maine
This classic Robert McCloskey book that I spotted at the bookstore brought me immediately back to childhood. It still holds up and due to it’s illustrations from the time, portraying a different lifestyle that kids can learn a lot about (the main character lives on a rural island). Sal the narrator is endearing! Plus, I remember reading this with my second graders and asked “What surprised you about this book?” One raised her hand and said “From the cover, I thought it would be boring, but it was really actually good!”
8. The Power of Yet
The adorable piglet uses the power of yet to deal with feelings of frustration when trying to learn new things! I can identify with this since I could not ride a bike without training wheels until I was 10. This book would definitely resonate with all kids!
9. I am Every Good Thing
This is a beautiful and empowering book with a young black narrator. He is confident and he has great dreams, but can also struggle and be afraid. It inspires us to pay attention to those who show their real selves.
10. What the Road Said
This ia actually a beautifully illustrated poem which helps build confidence and inspires readers. There are also lessons that can be learned from this picture book.
